George Thomas Monroe Coombes passed peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 13, 2016, after a brief illness, at the age of 90. Born in Duluth, Minnesota, he called Virginia Beach and Florida home. He was an avid runner and athlete. A Navy veteran and salty Chief, he was a proud American, who served his country with honor during WWII, Korea and Vietnam.
Those who he called friend knew him as an honorable gentleman, a trusted “sea daddy,” with a true “Can Do” spirit and light-hearted nature—a man’s man. He was always two hours early—never a minute late—and true to his word. Often a prankster, his sense of humor endeared him to many. He will be loved and remembered by those whose lives he touched throughout the many seasons of his life, including his wife of recent years, daughters, son, siblings, and vast extended family. As he was fond of saying, “Have a good day, but have a better tomorrow.”
Memorial Services scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at Altmeyer Funeral Chapel, Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach, VA. A social reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made at www.tmcfunding.com.
