Pedro Manuel Fernández Penichet (Pete Penichet, Pedro Fernandez), 80, of New Port Richey, FL passed away on July 7, 2023 in Dunedin, FL. He was born in Havana (HaBana), Cuba and attended de la Salle del Vedado and Stevens Institute of Technology. Pete was an electrical engineer at a cement plant. Pete was also an entrepreneur with his wife, some of their ventures include television repair – where many knew him as TV Man and Jewelry sales and repair. Pete also acquired a certification in Jewelry design and repair.
After Pete’s immigration from Cuba with his family at 18, they settled in New Jersey. After his marriage to Maribel, they spent a few years in New Jersey before returning to Florida. Pete’s home has been Pasco County for decades including Shady Hills, Land O’ Lakes and New Port Richey. Pete was an active member of his community including supporting his wife’s tenure as Honorary Mayor of Land O’ Lakes. Pete had many adventures with Maribel in retirement. Their first was sailing the Caribbean on “Paper Moon”, their ’36 Morgan Out Island sailboat. During their almost full year in the Caribbean, they lived on the boat in Puerto Rico for over a month. Other adventures included RVing in North America and frequent visits with their children and grandchildren. During this time Pete was an active member of Gulf Winds Sail Club, the Gulf Harbors community and the Sand Dollar RV Club and other organizations.
Pete was a fun loving, humble, protective, determined man who loved fiercely and wasn’t afraid to fight for his beliefs. He was very proud of all his children’s accomplishments. He also found so much love and joy with his grandchildren and was eagerly awaiting the arrival of his first great grandchild. He was going to sing Spanish lullabies to her. Pete is survived by his siblings: Maria de Lourdes (Martha), Joaquín and Jose (Silvia). He is also survived by his children and grandchildren: Deborah (Donnie), Pete (Heather), Joann (Brian), John, Michelle, Andrew (Lyndsee), Noah, AJ, Lourdes, Eli and Jonner.
Pete was preceded in death by his parents, Joaquín Fernández Rionda and Maria Lourdes Penichet, and his wife, Maribel.
Pete’s life will be celebrated with a Catholic Mass at St. Ignatius of Antioch Roman Catholic Church in Tarpon Springs on August 11, 2023 at 11:30 am with a reception in the Parish Hall directly after mass. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Stroke Association or St. Jude’s. Pete will be laid to rest in the family plot at the Memorial Plan Flagler Memorial Park in Miami later in the year.
